Day 1 - Gordons Bay to Struisbaai. 130 km Approx.

The picturesque village of Gordon Bay on the east side of False Bay is our departure point. We'll begin the day with a coastal transfer of approximately one hour through the villages of Bettys Bay and Kleinmond

Upon reaching Hermanus we will saddle up and begin our two-wheeled adventure.

We keep a lookout for whales on the section of coast as it is the winter home of the great Southern Right Whale. Most years, 200 or more whales visit the Cape coastline to escape the Antarctic winter and give birth to their young. The route today is purposefully shorter than most in order that we may find our legs and break in gently to our challenge and the terrain relatively easy-going. Turning inland at Stanford we take the asphalt road loop to Struisbaai via Bredasdorp. Blue Cranes are common on this section of road as we make our way back to the coast and Africa's most southern point.

We'll arrive in good time to enjoy a meal together and to reflect for a while on the reasons behind our journey.
